Acer saccharum

Circle Captain:
John Triana
Circle Location:
Prospect, Connecticut (United States)
Participants:
John Triana
Comments:

Weather: Sunny; 45-65, light wind

Location: Prospect, CT - backyard

Time At Location: 5 hours - on and off all day

Had two birds on Sit! day that I usually do not get in my backyard - 4 House Finches were on a feeder when I started in the morning. Also had Red-breasted Nuthatch on two occaisions during the day. Big miss was with the hawks - didn't see a single one all day. My yard is wooded so the window to the sky is small and just never got lucky when I was out there.

Time At Location: 7 hours

This was our first time doing the big sit, both as a location (Viles Arboretum) and as individuals. The date is late in this part of Maine for much variety but most of the birds one might have expected showed up. We took adavantage by working on our chip-note recognition.

Anecdotes:

Some of the passers-by thought we were a little crazy, but we know that.

We added eight new species were not seen or heard in the previous three years: green-winged teal, common loon, green heron, merlin, greater yellowlegs, spotted sandpiper, Bonaparte’s gull, barred owl, and white-throated sparrow. We also had three “nemesis” birds which were seen or heard by members of the bird-watching crew when they were outside the limits of the circle: great horned owl, gray catbird, dark-eyed junco. This is the first year we were not able to count a great horned owl. Bald eagles were seen at 10:12 am, 11:33 am, 2:13 pm (adult), and 2:56 pm.

Comments:

Weather: foggy cool to start, clear, warm with cool breeze throughout the day

Location: Sherburne WMA - South Farm

Time At Location: 6:30am to 7:00pm

Big Sit 2010 conducted at new observation platform in the middle of the impoundments at Sherburne Wildlife Mgt Area South Farm near Ramah/Maringuoin (just north of I-10 on the east levee of the Atchafalaya basin). 6:30 am to 7:00pm. Very foggy morning turned cool and clear with light cool north-western breeze blowing most of the day. Highs in the mid-80's. The new observation platform is located in the middle of water impoundments on the refuge which are managed for crawfish and waterfowl. As such, woodland birds are very scarce at this location. The dead end levee on which the platform is located did provide a few land birds. Notables were a late Orchard Oriole and fine adult male Yellow Warbler. Amazing lack of wading birds here -- last year at this time there were thousands of White Ibis -- this year we were lucky to get one! Little Blues have all gone. No Wood Storks or Spoonbills and we dipped on Snowies too. The Bald Eagles that nested last year in the ag field just to the east of South Farm are back and nest-tending. But we didn't see either of them til almost sundown. Late for shorebirds, but the habitat was decent and we should have had more. Mourning Dove was a strange miss. Other birds seen at South Farm but not from the platform included RC Kinglet, E. Towhee, Marsh Wren, BG Gnatcatcher, Downy Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher.

First bird noted at 0615hrs with White-throated Sparrow. From there several 'pulses' of activity at dawn, and then again just after sunrise. Some migration noted with Yellow-rumped, Palm and Blackpoll Warblers moving and later, Sharp-shinned Hawks (22). Several locally good species included Wood Duck,Northern Harrier, Gray-cheeked Thrush, White-crowned and Lincoln's Sparrows.

Anecdotes:

Site was fog-bound for about 90 minutes in mid-morning most certainly hampering the species tally. Overall, an excellent result for six hours and encouraging enough to try the same site next year! JPS

Time At Location: 6:00 AM until 5:00 PM

8 MEAS MEMBERS MANNED THE CIRCLE AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING THE DAY....(THANKS A HEAP TO BRENT G. FOR SHOWING UP BEFORE DAYLIGHT)....17 VISITORS STOPPED BY THE OBSERVATION POST. The 36 species observed missed last year's count by 1 (37), and it was a big difference from the highest count of 61 species in 2006. Even though we had a "short list" there were a couple of really nice birds included, namely the Sora and Sandhill Crane. Of course the sighting of a number of raptors always makes the day worthwhile. Included were Osprey, Bald Eagle, Nothern Harrier, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon. The lack of open water and no adjacent wooded area contributes to low counts at this time of year. Better luck next year.

Fallon Feathers

Circle Captain:
Susan Sawyer
Circle Location:
Fallon, Nevada (United States)
Participants:
6 people
Comments:

Weather: cool clear morning, warm sunny afternoon

Location: Tule Trail, Stillwater NWR, FAllon, NV

Time At Location: 7am - 3pm

LOTS of blackbirds in huge flocks coming in from hayfields; as day warmed, weed-control goat herd moved closer, which brought the swallows in hordes diving after the insects the goats kicked up; very entertaining to watch!

Anecdotes:

early afternoon, the raptors appeared, and seemed to play or practice at chasing the warblers and swallows into the cottonwoods, never catching any. biting insects soon followed and no amount of lotion, spray, repellant, swatting or protective clothing won that battle! even the goats left, along with most of the birds!

FBMP Migrants

Circle Captain:

Comments:

Weather: Beautiful - mid 50s to mid 70s, mostly sunny, light winds

Location: Northeastern Ozaukee County, WI on the Forest Beach Migratory Preserve

Time At Location: ~5:30 am - ~ 4 pm

Highlight was a Short-eared Owl that appeared at 6:35. Total of 50 species is excellent for this location at this time of year. We observed 22 species that we didn't see on the 2009 Big Sit and "missed" 12 species sighted last year.

Finley NWR Flyers

Circle Captain:
Molly Monroe
Circle Location:

Comments:

Weather: Rain in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon

Location: Cheadle Pond road up to barn

Time At Location: 0630-1730

A soggy morning kept regular sitters away but we had an awning of just the right size to cover our circle. Clearing in the afternoon brought a few friends out to help round out the list. Highlights were an entertaining Red-shouldered hawk (very vocal throughout the day and flew out a few times to harass a bald eagle and chase a raven), and great looks at a merlin and cooper's hawk flying right over us. Big misses were owls and several songbirds we've counted in years past.

Anecdotes:

Non bird observations were a very relaxed coyote and a pair of river otter playfully fishing among egrets in the marsh.

Comments:

Weather: Cloudy & cold in am, clear & warm in pm

Location: Maine Audubon Gilsland Farm Sanctuary North Meadow

Time At Location: 13.5 hrs.

Eric started things off before 5:00 am with a rail that flushed when he arrived at the site. Unfortunately, he didn't get a good enough look at it to determine which one it was, unidentified species are not counted. We finished at 6:15 pm with 61 species plus the unidentified rail. The morning was cloudy & cold but it warmed up in the afternoon & the winds that had been forecasted didn't materialize, so it was quite nice. This also resulted in more raptor movement. We ended up with 8 species. Sparrows made a good showing as usual with 6 species. There were 7 species of geese & ducks including Green-winged Teal & American Wigeon. Shorebird numbers were not very high but a Wilson's Snipe put on a nice show, flying over us & taking a couple of turns around the field before landing out in the middle of the meadow. As usual, the resident Wild Turkeys refused to participate & boycotted the event.

With the weather being very nice, this made it nice to be outside in the Tower to observe the birds. Besides the ususal birds that we have in our yard, there were lots of gulls flying, a few migrants passing through, not as many as we have had in the past and the Hawks were flying high. Between watching Birds and enjoying the awesome potluck, we all had a great time. We had crickets, frogs, at least 5 different Butterfly species, 2 sphinx moths, mosquitoes & bats flying around. The little "no see-ums" were out in full force later in the afternoon, even repellent didn't help some birders, making it irritable for Birders, forcing some to leave early. This still was a great "Big Sit" for everyone, always hoping to see another bird come flying through.

Anecdotes:

Paul & Koni would like to "Thank" there fellow Hutchinson Area Bird Club members and friends for participating in the Big Sit. This is our 6th year hosting the Big Sit at our place and we enjoying having fellow birders here to have the enjoyment of the birds that around and pass through. Also, thanks for the terrific potluck that we all enjoyed.

Time At Location: 7am-7pm

Not a bad day for our backyard. We got 25 of the total of 33 birds seen on our yard list for the last 3 years. A few birds slipped by unidentified. I vow to get more warblers next year. A couple got away as well as a Hawk, probably Cooper's and a oriole or evening grosbeak sort of bird flying overhead. I wish I could have ID'ed that one. The birds had nice color and were fairly large. I did notice I had 23 of 25 species in the first 3 hours of the sit!

Time At Location: Midnight until 4:30pm

the feeders were busy and the highlight was a group of eastern screech owls at night and morning and a flyby hummingbird species that was a passerby and didn't show up again at the feeders. Another great time of food, friends and birding.

Location: Kenai NWR - Skilak Lake (Lower Boat Launch)

Time At Location: 11 hours - sunrise to sunset (0800- 1900)

One lone moose across the lake. Spruce Grouse, Northern Goshawk, Great Horned Owl, and Red-breasted Nuthatch seen nearby but not from the count circle, alas. Expected to tally 30 species but weather was abnormally sunny, windless, and warm. Because the Big Sit is so late for us at this latitude, 60 degrees north latitude, fall migration (diversity and abundance) peaks much earlier - late July to early August. This venue should yield 60 to 70 species from late May to mid June.

Anecdotes:

One birder fell in the frigid lake and had to dry off by a fire! Possibly the first officially registered and reported Big Sit in Alaska ever!!!

Location: Tubby Cove observation platform at Eastern Neck NWR

Time At Location: 0635 to 1535, 9 hours

Best sightings: Red-thr. Loon flew by leading a flock of Canada Geese (oddly enough). It was in juvenile plumage with gray shawl across side of neck and base of throat and white chin, feet barely projecting behind, gray upperparts, and rapid wingbeat. Good raptor flight largely highlighted by harriers and sharpies, but the big surprise was the kettle of 40 Broad-wings at about 1430 south of Calfpasture Cove milling around for a while. Surf Scoter was an oddity in Calfpasture Cove, a young bird.

I was pleased to hear the Great Horned Owl on my first try. We heared one at dawn and dusk too. The Sharp-shinned Hawk was my suprize raptor for the day. I saw an Osprey and a White-tailed Kite on Friday and Thursday. We also sometimes see Bald Eagle and Harrier Hawks here. Sunset brought a nice flurry of activity with at least 5 Western Bluebirds hunting close by. Our reward for putting up the nest boxes. A fun first Big Sit in Fresno County.

Anecdotes:

While not in the circle I found a Nuttal's Woodpecker. Also saw a Belted Kingfisher about a mile away.

Great beutiful day. We had the second most species we've seen in ten years. Somehow we missed Double-crested Cormorant - it's always some common bird that you miss! Large numbers of Canada Geese, Blue Jays and American Robins were seen migrating in the early morning. Hawks were few and far between but we did manage most of the expected species. Best bird way a flyover calling Dickcissel.

It was white-breasted nuthatch day here. Although we went out front and suggested to our mourning dove that it should get to the back yard, it did not comply. A day earlier and we would have had a winter wren and an Eastern phoebe.

Anecdotes:

We actually did not realize that we were participating in the Big Sit. It's Thanksgiving Sunday here and we were simply sitting outside watching the birds when Sara said, "You know, sometime soon they do this Big Sit - we should think about doing it!" When we went inside and checked the date, lo and behold, it was today. We called ours the Little Sit.

We performed our usual circle-creating ritual, but this year we used organic unbleached flour to highlight the circle. Our first birds of the day were Western Screech Owl and Great Horned Owl. The baklava tradition ended and the Bosa Donut tradition started with this, our 15 th Big Sit! at this location. Our total for the day was 65. We added five new species to our cumulative list bringing the total for the 15 years to 134. Significant misses were Song Sparrow, Vermilion Flycatcher, and Cactus Wren. A highlight of the day was watching an Osprey chasing an adult Bald Eagle. We raised about $1,200 for conservation activities for the Maricopa Audubon Society.

Location: Big Oak Tree State Park, southeast Missouri

Time At Location: 10 hours, 45 minutes.

Sunday's Big Sit results were a bit less than stellar, but we had a great time in good company with each other. Temperatures climbed quickly and maxed out at around 90 degrees here in the southeast. The avian action might best be described like that of a 4th of July sparkler, hot and dazzling but quickly fizzling out at around 8:45 a.m. With our lack of rain here all summer, flyover flocks of waterfowl were nonexistent. Also with no evident wind, soaring raptors couldn't be bought. We pulled up stakes and broke camp at 3:45 p.m. Our team's total observed for the day was 49 species including a very poor showing for warblers (other than the myriad of Butter-butts). Only one Black-throated Green Warbler and only one Orange-crowned Warbler were observed. Several big misses were Cedar Waxwing, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Broad-winged & Red-tailed Hawks, Br. Creeper, & Song and Swamp Sparrows.

We saw lots of migrating hawks and bald eagles, ABOUT 30 in just about 2 hours in our backyard. After we cleared some branches and brush we saw that many other birds were winging by. If we had filled the feeders our count for yard birds would have been much higher.(We observed over 250 birds flying by and surely missed some species) A great first Big Sit for us!

108 species - a new record for Delaware and the State Park! Few raptors were moving, but, as always, many species were represented during the course of the day. Waterfowl diversity was lower than past years, but had all three species of Scoter and several dabbler species, including a first for the Cape Henlopen Circle - Mallard. Nocturnal migration provided us with 13 species of passerines before dawn. One late Bobolink was the highlight. Black-crowned Night-Heron made up for no-show Eastern Screech-Owl, but we were all shocked that there was no sign of Great Horned Owl morning or evening! Gladly, by 9 am, we already had 96 species including several more species of Warblers, Purple Finch, and the biggest surprise of the day: SANDWICH TERN! Though they breed in the region, and often at the Cape, they are extremely rare after September. October 10th now constitutes the latest date in Delaware for this species. While no truly rare, or surprising, species were recorded later in the day, the weather was beautiful. It was a delight to close the day out with a flyby Red-throated Loon, in beautiful evening sun, for species #108.

Anecdotes:

It's almost sad that one needs an excuse to get out, pre-dawn, to greet the sun as it crests the horizon over the Atlantic. Worse still, en excuse to gaze for several hours at a moonless, star-filled sky, wondering what's above both near and far. This year's Big Sit was not unique. It proved to be just as grand an excuse to get out, enjoy migration, relish the outdoors, and be together, as always. Above the din of Gull squawks, Tern creaks, Yellow-rump chips, and Mockingbird warbles, the laughter of the day was loud and constant. A better occasion to laugh, learn, and teach one another about birds and birding has yet to be conceived. Thanks again, for the perfect excuse...

Video at: http://birdpanama.blogspot.com/2010/10/sit-sightings.html It turned out to be a pretty good day to stay home and watch the activity in the yard. We had a strong start (Canada Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler and Bay-breasted Warbler!), slowed during the morning, and languished throughout the afternoon. Although it could hardly be considered bad, the weather was not cooperative for high bird activity. It started with rain, continued with overcast, clouds, fog, and a few more rain showers through the day. We did have occasional patches of blue sky and several periods consisting of a few minutes of sun. But we had a good time - this is the first full day we have ever stayed home and done nothing but keep an eye on the wildlife activity in the yard. So many chores and projects beckon during the usual day at the casita.

Time At Location: 6:30am to 6:00pm

A beautiful fall day brought out dozens of birders at Eagle Creek Park's Ornithology Center. The group was hoping to surpass the 56 species seen during the inaugural Big Sit in 2009. Despite a great effort, we fell a few species short. However, as slow as the day was at times, we were elated that we managed 53 species. Highlights included Bald Eagle, both yellowlegs, Sanderling, Baird's Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, both kinglets, and Red-breasted Nuthatch. To the delight of the hearty souls that were present all day, the nuthatch began visiting a feeder set up next to the observation deck during the last two hours of the count. Wonderful views of a bird just a few feet away from where the birders sat.

Large flocks of Cackling Geese, a few white-fronts and Sandhill Cranes, and numerous scattered ducks enjoyed the dining at Rest Lake. Seven species of shorebirds and as many species of raptors to keep them on the move, including three different peregrines. Photos of an American Avocet taken within 1/4 mile of the circle cycled participants around the tour route for more photos, but no level of harassment by the peregrines brought it into view from the circle. Despite thousands of Cackling Geese foraging and flying by, not a single Canada Goose was seen or heard. Same with Killdeer and Brewer's Blackbird, which sat silently 150 yards distant and screened by a stand of corn. As did W Scrub Jay and Swainson's Thrush, viewed between the parking lot and the circle 60 yards away.

Anecdotes:

The young participants were the most fun, with only a chair to bring them to eye level with the brand new world of spotting scope observation. It was a difficult choice whether to root for the constant barrage of eagle, harriers and falcons getting prey airborne, or for the prey to settle and offer enough visible markings to be identified. The most frequent comment was the "cute nutria", an unfortunate blemish to a mostly native view of wildlife.

Location: Central Avenue Bridge at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Project

Thomas Gaskill: "The number and variety of birds was way down this year. The low water in both the channel and ADOT Wash was probably partly responsible. It was, though, a very good morning for birds of prey. We had three species new for our Big Sit circle: a lovely singing house wren, a beautiful western meadowlark, and a great big, healthy, adult BALD EAGLE! The eagle flew downstream right in front of us at 10 AM. It was amazing!"

Our "best" bird might have been the short-tails hawk (dark morph) who sat in the top of a tree long enough for all present to get a good look at him (or her). Of course, the northern rough-winged swallows were pretty cooperative also. It was a great day, and I am sure we will be Sitting again next October.

What a great day! Pre-dawn birding was slow, but we managed to get a few flight calls and three owl species. After the sun came up, lots of birds were flying over, including American Robins, Blue Jays, and Purple Finches. At the end of the day, we had seen over 100 Purple Finches, which is unusual for this area. Around noon, the raptors picked up, and we managed to find Merlin, American Kestrel, Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, and Red-tailed, Cooper's, Sharp-shinned, and Red-shouldered Hawks. Around 2, the raptor flight shut down, but some new birds popped up around the circle included Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Rock Pigeon. As the sun set, we managed to find a few new species for the day, including Osprey, Mallard, and Red-winged and Rusty Blackbirds. Although the day was slow at times, we had a bigger group than last year and found almost as many species!

Anecdotes:

It was a beautiful day on our boardwalk here at Shaver's Creek! A Project Songbird Workshop was also being held at the Center during the day, so we welcomed 22 Penn State students to our count circle throughout the day to share in the fun. We started the day in the wee hours of 10.10.10 with 1 EASO, 2 Great-horned Owls, and 3 Barred Owls. At dawn we were greeted with an American Woodcock zipping by over our heads, and the chilly morning gave way to a wonderfully birdy, sunny morning. We ended the count with a flock of Waxwings that had theretofore been elusive, bringing our total to 47 species for the day.

Great weather though a little chilly at 6:30 a.m. (26) to start the day but warmed upicly by 10:00 a.m. to a high of 58 degrees. Very little wind for morning hours but slight breeze began in early afternoon. The habitat where the count circle was offered few species this time of year as there was no ponds, lakes, marshes, open fields near by. Count circle was decided to be near refuge headquarters this first year in hopes of informing public of what the count was about and for easy access of participants and visitors. Will re-think location on the refuge for next year.

Weather: Heavy rain in the morning breaking up mid-day

Location: Discovery Park, Seattle WA

Time At Location: 7:00 to 17:00

Heavy rain in the morning put a damper on the birding but not our spirits. As the rain let up, the woodland birds started showing themselves. A Pileated Woodpecker flew by a couple of times and Evening Grosbeaks called from the tree tops. When the weather improved in the afternoon, we got looks at a Cooper's Hawk, Bald Eagle and a late Osprey. We were reminded of the fall migration when we saw small groups of Greater White-fronted, Snow, and Cackling Geese. The Cacklers were calling as they flew by to help with the ID. As we were packing up in the late afternoon, a calling Barred Owl gave us a nice end to a great day.

Anecdotes:

The weather forced us off the bluff over looking the Puget Sound where we were last year. We decided to set up next to the visitor center at Discovery Park. We brought bird study skins along and took turns talking to people about birds and the park. Generous walk up visitors donated over a hundred dollars to the park's plant restoration fund which was the reason we were doing the Big Sit. When we weren't seeing birds, we were talking about birds. We didn't see a lot of birds, but we had a very birdy day.

Weather: Mostly clear 7:15am to 7:45 (with fog building); fairly heavy fog between 7:45am & 9:30am; clearing by 9:45am, sunny afterwards

Location: St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge: viewing platform next to lighthouse

Time At Location: 7:10am to 5:00pm

We observed from low tide to high tide, and saw many shorebirds. A Peregrine Falcon swooped in and scared off the shorebird flock temporarily, but didn't catch anyone that we could see. A Reddish Egret was dancing in the salt marsh in the fog. An Osprey kept us company atop the lighthouse. There was more water in the salt marsh this year than last. Temperatures ranged from about 60 degrees at dawn to about 85 when we finished at 5pm.

Anecdotes:

Bottlenose Dolphins were feeding along the shore with much splashing and commotion. Monarch butterflies were draped along palm fronds and saltbush during the heavy fog, but became lively and fed on the many goldenrods in bloom once the sun came out.

Comments:

Weather: Sunny, high around 60, windy at times

Location: Stage Island Pool observation tower, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Plum Island MA

Time At Location: 6:30 AM to 6:45 PM

When we first arrived there were numerous flocks of Canada Geese and Double-crested Cormorants cruising overhead; I soon abandoned my hopes of keeping track of bird numbers as well as species. There were also many flocks of birds over the ocean, mostly White-winged Scoter but also several of Brant among other species. Tim Factor and Neil Hayward stopped by the tower and spotted a Eurasian Green-winged Teal among the hundreds of its American cohorts. The Yellow-billed Cuckoo surprised us, but others were seen from numerous locations of coastal Massachusetts and Connecticut the same day, so perhaps a movement of this species was taking place. Ours reappeared (or maybe there were more than one?) many times through the afternoon and evening.

Anecdotes:

Due to my not having been to the Refuge in many years, I got my pools mixed up when I registered; we actually did our Sit at the Stage Island Pool, not Bill Forward Pool. The local weather forecasters issued a frost warning the night before the Sit in our area, but by the end of our count Jason and I, trying to hang on and tally one more owl species before the refuge closed, were being harassed by mosquitoes... Chris and Jason briefly left the Sit circle to see a Curlew Sandpiper that was being admired by dozens of birders a bit further south on the Island, just out of sight from our circle. A number of other bird species that we missed from within the circle were seen by birders just beyond our visibility, including Black Skimmer, Short-eared Owl, Horned Lark, Northern Shoveler, Chipping Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco. At least 16 other species were reported from other parts of the island that eluded detection from our Sit circle. Maybe next year I should Sit in a less popular birding spot so I won't know as much about what we missed!

Location: Just south of Oxbow Meadows, Muscogee County, GA

Time At Location: JC: 3:00 p.m. to midnight; PL: midnight to midnight; JM: Midnight to 12:30 p.m., returned at 4:00 p.m., remained until 9:30 p.m.

Almost all the species expected were seen, except notable absences were Anhinga ('their' pond separated from the Sit circle by trees); Blue-gray Gnatcatcher were curiously absent; Eastern Towhee was missed(I figured the locals had already left for points south before being replaced by their northern counterparts). Notable "Just Out of Reach" bird ("J.O.R"): American Goldfinch: Not seen nor heard within the circle, but heard at end of trail 20 ft. from circle and never came near. Other JOR's have since been confirmed (seen/heard) from within the circle. Nevertheless, a fine birding day, a decent species tally, and a great time was had by all.

Anecdotes:

Notable non-bird events: Listening to coyotes wail, sounding uncomfortably close at times; shining flashlight into a vine-covered tree and seeing a pair of eyes shining back; looking at Jupiter and her moons through the spotting scope.

Good hawk movements in the middle of the day. Great morning, most birds seen early save for hawks. The afternoon was quiet and no new birds after 3pm. We were birding from my porch before, during and after my grandfathers 97th birthday. We also used a ladder to see the trees in our front yard, where most of our warblers migrate through. The N. Parula never got high enough in the trees for me to see it from the ladder though.

Anecdotes:

We also spent time at night looking at Jupitor, it's red spot, storm bands and moons, and Uranus, Neptune, The ring nebula, Orion's Nebula, as well as many other constellations and star clusters. Oddly enough we watched a Goshawk and sharpie with the space telescope. Which inverts them, so you see them upside down.

The Utah Lake Provo Airport Dike Sit Circle was covered from 6:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. This was our 9th year participating on the big sit. Best birds were a Peregrine Falcon in the morning and a Barn Owl, our last bird of the day, at 7:30 pm. The Peregrine made some spectacular dives over the water south of our sit spot then circled out in front of us in great morning light. It is interesting to watch how the bird numbers and species at one spot changes throughout the day and from day to day.  Great and Snowy Egret, Merlin, Osprey, Wilson's Warbler and Lewis's Woodpecker were all seen there the day before but nowhere to be found on Big Sit Day. We were able to see or hear 54 species from our circle tying last year's total. Our record is 58 species in one day and our 9 year (9 day) Big Sit Life List is now at 107 species. We added two Big Sit Lifers this year - Peregrine Falcon and Spotted Sandpiper.

BIG SIT…UVALDE, TX COOK’S SLOUGH Bob Rasa, Uvalde 10/10/10 I set up camp at the wetlands pavilion on Saturday 10/9/10 at 3:48. Lots of butterflies to photo…simply a beautiful day…88 Monarchs recorded flying by…. 85 degrees. Low tonight 63 forecasted. Richard Redmond joined me at 5:50. The whole area swamped with many dragonflies…mostly Common Green Darners. Good evening before the count started: 24 species…Lesser Nighthawk; Wilson’s Snipe; and Eastern Screech Owl among the goodies. Also, we had a Cooper’s Hawk drift in over the Pavilion. During the first early morning hours Common Yellowthroat and American Kestrel up early. Nice morning…early on…59 degrees. Clouds rolled in early with very high humidity making everything feel wet. Tripp Davenport came in and promptly found the Osprey pretty far out…it did come in close near us to photograph. Started to clear at 1040. Afternoon very slow…but pleasant. Two visitors to the site: Ralph Gonzalez, Radiology Director, Uvalde Memorial Hospital and his wife. Last species for the twenty-four hours was recorded at 1949. A Long-billed Thrasher, doing his best Groove-billed Ani call. During the night twenty some Cattle Egrets but were only seen at first light…Pretty close to us  Total Species for the 24 hours was 48.

Weather perfect for watchers, too nice for birds. Very little bird activity, no birds migrating or just moving around. New species this year were sanderlings, cedar waxwings and sharp-tailed grouse.

Anecdotes:

We beat our 2008 record of 35 species when it rained or drizzled all day long! Mosquitoes and gnats were out. Also, monarchs and red admiral were flying.

A beautiful, sunny day, though quite warm in the afternoon. Limited nocturnal migration. The most memorable events were the intense bird activity before and two hours after sunrise and an immature Cooper's Hawk exploding from the tree line and nailing a Swamp Sparrow in a small clump of saplings within 20 feet of the circle. Eleven new species recorded after noon.

At least 10 goldfinches at one time, both male and female. Male and female cardinals. Male and female red bellied woodpeckers. At least 10 sparrows on the fence and in the rose hedge with the hawk present and pursueing them into the hedge. Usually sight several other species which were not in evidence during the Big Sit (10/11/10), such as hairy woodpecker, red wing blackbird, brown headed cowbird, brown creeper, heron, canada geese and mallards.

Anecdotes:

Appearance of the hawk greatly limited our sightings.

The numbers: 17 hours, 22 people, 2 dogs, and 59 species of birds. 1st bird of the day was a Great Horned Owl and the last bird, a Merlin. Highlights included a kettle of Swainson's Hawks, Turkey Vultures, and 2 Black Vultures (rare for Cleveland County); a flyover by a flock of 9 Wood Ducks; the single Black-throated Green Warbler who brought great satisfaction to the listers amongst us due to its rarity this far west; and the truly wonderful camaraderie.

Anecdotes:

This year we had better weather, better optics, and better ears. We beat our inaugural attempt by 12 species and have a new number to challenge us next year. Misses included Northern Cardinal, Tufted Titmouse, American Robin and American Goldfinch. We hope to have a better handle on nocturnal flight calls by next October!

Weather: Mid 60's to low 80's. Sunny all day. Pleasant in the morning. South wind increasing through the afternoon, 12-15 mph.

Location: Village Creek Drying Beds, Arlington, Texas.

Time At Location: 4am to 7:30pm

Going into this year’s big sit, we didn’t have high aspirations after Tropical Storm Hermine came through last month and filled up the drying beds with water and sent all the shorebirds south. Because of all the water this year, I did some scouting and tried to justify moving our big sit circle to another part of the beds. After listing the pros and cons of each location, I decided that the circle should again go right about where it’s always been. The Village Creek Drying Beds are birded heavily year round and we knew going in that this year would be an uphill battle. I personally just wanted to get to 72 species, which was our total the very first year we did this. All in all, it was a very good morning of birding and we spent the afternoon doing what birders do best: watching and hoping. Eighty species is nothing to sneeze at.

Anecdotes:

A few of us from Fort Worth Audubon gathered at 4am as usual to try for owls and rails and again we did well, getting both Sora and Virginia Rail for the 4th year in a row. We also got the usual owls: Barred and Great Horned. Several more people showed up at dawn and as the sky started to lighten the birds started to stir. A nice early surprise was a flock of eight White-faced Ibis that couldn’t find a suitable place to put down. We didn’t expect those this year with the high water. A couple of other early morning surprises were a distant Common Nighthawk and seventeen Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. One of the goals this year was to finally get Green Heron on our cumulative VCDB big sit list. Even though VCDB is a great place for waders, Green Herons seem to vacate the beds a little earlier than the other waders and we miss it every year. I was thrilled to finally spot one perched high in a tree about mid-morning. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly two American Golden-Plovers that flew over our circle and left us somewhat astonished. Unbeknownst to us, the last new species for the day was seen around noon: Orange-crowned Warbler. Soon, the south wind picked up as forecasted and we knew that migration would remain halted. In the early afternoon, the number of participants dwindled and a half dozen of us hunkered down for a long slow sunburn. We hoped in vain for some of the raptors that we usually get like Osprey, Swainson’s Hawk, and Merlin but it was not to be. We still had lots of ducks (twelve species) and thousands of swallows (five species) to pick through and keep us company. All afternoon we looked forward to the early evening, when as in past years everything would go crazy as the birds started coming to roost and then we would add a few more species to the list right before it got dark. Greg Cook said he didn’t think we would get much else new for the rest of the day and strangely, that’s exactly what happened. So we started at 4am and had 80 species by 12:30, and then we birded another seven hours and finished stuck on 80 species. Good grief Charley Amos. I’d like to thank Steve Nutter and the City of Fort Worth water department for their continued support in letting us hang out at the beds after hours in a vain attempt to confound our spouses.
