Tear That Mountain Down
In the past 20 years, more than 1 million acres in Appalachia have been destroyed by mountaintop removal (MTR) mining. Author, artist, and contributor Julie Zickefoose discusses the environmental impact and threat posed to one of West Virginia's treasures, the cerulean warbler.
Rare Bird Focus
The endangered Kirtland's warbler is one of the rarest members of the wood warbler (Parulidae) family. It is a fascinating bird for a few reasons: First, it nests in just a few counties in Michigan's northern Lower and Upper Peninsulas. Also, it is closely tied to a narrow and distinctive habitat of young jack pine barrens where it conceals its nest in the lush understory. It has been on the endangered species list since 1967.
Shade-grown Coffee
Scientists at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center have discovered that the connection between birds and coffee helps coffee farmers and the environment. Learn the facts on shade-grown coffee and find a source near you.
The Ivory-billed Woodpecker
A team of ornithologists organized by Cornell's Lab of Ornithology has rediscovered at least one male ivory-billed woodpecker, alive and well and living in Arkansas. The news, which broke April 28, 2005, has turned the birding world upside down, and my heart inside out. The first time we had a chance to save the ivory-billed woodpecker, we allowed it to slip away. Could we pull it back from the brink this time?
