Episode #34: The Birding Life of Greg Miller
Posted on November 18, 2011
Episode Duration: 58 minutes, 03 seconds
Ohio birder Greg Miller never imagined that he'd one day inspire a character in a major motion picture. It all started one year when, after a tough patch in his life, Greg decided to do a North American birding big year. The year was 1998. A few years later he was interviewed, along with two other big year birders, by author Mark Obmascik for his book "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and a Fowl Obsession."
Fast forward a few more years and Greg is asked to be a consultant for a movie being made by big-time Hollywood talent, based upon the book "The Big Year."
This episode of This Birding Life is an audio recording of Greg Miller telling the story of his own birding life to attendees at the 2011 Midwest Birding Symposium. I think you'll agree that Greg is a great storyteller and a charming, genuinely nice person.
Episode #33: An Interview with David Frankel, Director of The Big Year
Posted on October 5, 2011
Episode Duration: 18 minutes, 57 seconds
In this episode, TBL host Bill Thompson, III, interviews David Frankel, director of the movie "The Big Year." This movie, which is loosely based on Mark Obmascik's popular book "The Big Year" has the bird-watching world all aflutter over how birding and birders will be portrayed on the silver screen. Hollywood has not always treated birders kindly. But the story of three men devoting most of their individual time and money to try to set the North American record for the most species seen in a calendar year (hence the term "big year") seems to have broad appeal outside the realm of birders.
David Frankel is a sought-after Hollywood director with two major hits to his credit: "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Marley and Me." He describes working on "The Big Year" with an all-star cast of actors which includes Steve Martin, Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Angelica Huston, and many others.
