Product Details

Julie Zickefoose lives for the moment when a wild, free living bird that she has raised or rehabilitated comes back to visit her; their eyes meet and they share a spark of understanding. Her reward for the grueling work of rescuing birds—such as feeding baby hummingbirds every twenty minutes all day long—is her empathy with them and the satisfaction of knowing the world is a birdier and more beautiful place.

The Bluebird Effect is about the change that's set in motion by one single act, such as saving an injured bluebird—or a hummingbird, swift, or phoebe. Each of the twenty five chapters covers a different species, and many depict an individual bird, each with its own personality, habits, and quirks. And each chapter is illustrated with Zickefoose's stunning watercolor paintings and drawings. Not just individual tales about the trials and triumphs of raising birds, The Bluebird Effect mixes humor, natural history, and memoir to give readers an intimate story of a life lived among wild birds.

Julie's drawings of birds are beautiful and very lifelike. I especially like her hummingbirds as we here in NC have been hummer fans for several years. Her bird descriptions are wonderful I learned things about her birds I never was aware of before. Julie you should offer some of your sketches for sale thru Bird Watchers digest. Thanks for a great book.

I have long been fascinated by Julie's work - prose or artwork. This book is a joy to have in my library. I am only into the 3rd story, but the writing style paints a picture of its own! The book jacket is lovely and a work of art in itself.

I had asked for the book to be signed and was surprised to receive a phone call about my request and whether I was willing to wait a few extra days for Julie to return from a trip to personalize it! This is truly putting the customer first and went beyond what any business normally does.

BWD treats you like family and I am impressed with the book and the professional friendly folks who work there.

This is a book I will treasure and reread in years to come. Thank you Julie for expressing in print what I cannot find words for myself.

I have not finished this book, however, what I have read is wonderful. I'm anxious to read more. I read Julie Zickefoose's book, Letters From Eden, and enjoyed it very much.

I've been ill the last couple weeks and The Bluebird Effect has been good company, a great diversion. I follow Julie's blog, admire her talents, and reading her book has given me much pleasure., taking me to a season that I've been awaiting...spring, and summer beyond.
