"Male Anna's hummers have no regard for nesting matters. They are noted for their fiery courtship displays but pair-bonding does not follow. This male hummer is not guarding his mate on the nest--he is there because of the flowers. It is the food that he will defend--not the nest--while the female tries not to be seen. I knew I wanted that mean look that male hummers have. It suits them well. In order to simulate that flashy iridescent gorget and crown of the Anna's, it requires hard-edged contrast, so the environment needed to be dark and not too complicated."
Larry McQueen's artwork has appeared in many major exhibitions, in best-selling field guides, and in numerous magazines and other publications. His interest in birds and art began during his childhood in Pennsylvania when he received his first bird guide and marveled at the illustrations by Fuertes, Peterson, and others. Mr. McQueen was the Audubon Alliance Artist of the Year for 1993, and his work has been selected many times for the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson "Birds In Art" exhibit. He lives in Eugene, Oregon.
