"Even after bird watching for more than 40 years, I am still overwhelmed by seeing the first scarlet tanager of spring. Its raspy call from the tops of the flowering oaks and maples announces that the male is back from his winter home in the tropics and on territory. As I gaze into the mass of yellow-green foliage, I can easily see a flame-red color that is so pure and bright it seems to glow. This tanager brought me back to a childhood time in the park woods near my home in Schenectady, New York. I was in the middle of a deep, dark forest when I saw a spot of light seeping into the woods and illuminating the trunk of a tree. Suddenly the shadow of a bird danced across the sunspot, revealing a bird in the branches above me. A male scarlet tanager hopped into the spotlight."
