Artist, writer, photographer, and conservationist, Roger Tory Peterson was the best-known bird watcher in the world before his death in 1996. Famed for his field guides, that revolutionized interest in nature around the world, he strongly promoted nature education. Peterson's legacy lives on within the institution that bears his name, The Roger Tory Peterson Institute, in Jamestown, New York. The institute promotes the study and teaching of natural history through a variety of programs and publications aimed at teachers and young people.
