"Caspian terns are big, hearty birds with a global distribution—they're named for Russia's Caspian Sea. Whenever I encounter them, these gull-sized terns always surprise and delight me.
In this painting, I let wet watercolor washes mingle and play, like the foreground birds, who are giving each other a formal greeting."
Julie Zickefoose has been writing and painting covers for Bird Watcher's Digest since 1986; "Sidelight—Caspian Terns" is her 20th cover. "Writing constitutes most of my work now, but when I do paint, I like to let the watercolors run a little more freely than I used to," she says.
A limited edition of 300 prints of Sidelight—Caspian Terns has been created. The actual image size is 14" x 10", the print size is 17" x 13", and the matted size is 18" x 14". Each print is signed and numbered by the artist. The full-color reproduction is printed on a neutral pH, acid-free paper.
