"I had been sitting for sometime on a river dock when I heard an odd knocking sound. Slowly turning my head, I found a female belted kingfisher thwacking a minnow against her perch. She flipped it down headfirst, wiped her beak, and leapt from the perch with a rattle, seeming to mock my desire to get another look at her. Kingfishers have little time for bird watchers."
