"California quail are regulars at my bird feeder, which I can see from my studio window. When they come to the feeder I always stop to watch for a while. They are very cautious birds, especially when the little chicks are around. When a covey with chicks comes though, the male always keeps an eye on me from a lookout perch. Any quick movement can send them off to the bushes in a flash. 'The Sentinel' is a tribute to the ever-watchful duty of an adult California quail."
Bart Rulon has been a full-time artist since graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1990 with a degree in scientific illustration. He spends his time exploring the area surrounding his Whidbey Island studio, which overlooks Puget Sound, and taking researching trips throughout the world. From wading through tall marsh grass to paddling his sea kayak through shoreline waters, Bart's painting ideas stem from what he sees on his outdoor adventures. Rulon's work has been included in many exhibitions with the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. His work has been chosen many times for the Society of Animal Artists annual exhibition, and has been included in many publications.
