"I was birding at Point Lobos near Carmel, California, when I crested a granite cliff just above the roaring, storm-tossed Pacific, and there was my first black oystercatcher! I was surprised and incredulous at the sight of this medium-sized, silky black shorebird with its long comical red-orange bill. It is this wonderful moment of discovery that I have attempted to share with you in this painting. I portrayed this magnificent shorebird in his very limited niche: on the narrow ribbon of surf-pounded rocks, somewhere between low and high tide."
Cynthia Fjelstad has no formal art training, yet her love of wildlife in general and her specific passion for birds has compelled her to draw and paint since early childhood. This love of birds and painting was instilled in Cynthia by her mother who was a talented painter in her own right. Her works are in permanent collections including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and the private collection of Jon Seerey-Lester.
