"I remember walking to school one May morning when I was nine years old. It was gray and rainy, and the old Victorian homes were looking brown and soggy. As I turned the corner on a sidewalk full of puddles, I noticed bird activity in a small apple tree. In an instant a breeding adult male Blackburnian warbler hopped down within five feet of me and caught a small insect. The sight of this flame of a bird made me stop and watch it for more than 10 minutes, and the vivid memories of the encounter allowed this painting to practically paint itself. Every time I encounter this little forest sprite, I decide to give up looking for other birds in order to watch it. I knew that I would one day have to create a painting of it. This watercolor of Blackburnian warblers is long overdue."
