"Red knots and horseshoe crabs have played an important role in
Delaware Bay’s history, both natural and political. I will always remember my first visits to Reed’s Beach in the early 1980s to witness the massive flocks of red knots feeding on shorelines green with horseshoe crab eggs. I have also watched, helplessly, as huge numbers of horseshoe crabs were being harvested. Red knots and horseshoe crabs have both experienced severe declines since those days, but recent harvest restrictions bring hope that these species will bounce back. Although far from a success story yet, this illustrates how public education about the delicate balance of nature is critical to the protection of the natural world."
