"Redpolls, these appealing little finches, don't often come as far south as my home in south-central Pennsylvania. We did have an irruption of them in the late 1970s, a time of several hard winters in a row. My picture framer's wife, a fellow bird enthusiast, actually had several redpolls eating out of her hand at that time—a rare and fortunate experience!"
