Hawk Retellings

By Mrs. Arvidson's 2nd Grade Class

Oceanside, CA

Baby the parakeet is our 2nd grade class pet. She is a well-loved bird by all my students. On warm days we like to put her out on our class porch to get some fresh air. Unfortunately on this particular day, she got more than just fresh air. While giving my weekly spelling test, my 20 second graders and I heard a terrible commotion on the porch. I immediately ran to the door and saw an enormous hawk eyeing our beloved bird. When I saw that Baby was still safe in her cage, I grabbed my camera and snapped a couple shots. My class stood and watched the hawk in amazement from the safety of our classroom. Finally, my parent helper (Chase's granddad) gently shooed the hawk away. We then carefully brought Baby back inside to the safety of our classroom. The hawk visit was the talk of the playground.

Baby’s Adventure as Told by the Students

Taylor S: What I saw the hawk do to Baby is try to attack. It was pecking and trying to put its foot in the cage. I also saw it trying to get Baby the Parakeet's feathers back in the cage. That is what I saw happen to Baby the Parakeet.

Brier M: A big hawk came where the cage was. He was trying to eat Baby the Parakeet. Finally Chase's granddad scared it away. Baby was safe.

Jackie B: When we were taking a spelling test we heard Baby making noise. When we went to the door, we saw the hawk. It was trying to eat Baby and Mrs. Arvidson took a picture and Chase's grandpa scared him away. We put Baby inside.

Ryan T: This is what happened to Baby the Parakeet. We were taking a spelling test when we heard a sound. It was Baby the Parakeet! A hawk was trying to eat Baby the Parakeet! We made the hawk go away. Mrs. Arvidson took a picture of the hawk. Then Mrs. Arvidson brought Baby the Parakeet back inside. Then we continued to do our spelling test.

Emma M: What I saw and heard was … Baby squawking. Here is the story. It all started out when we were taking a spelling test on Monday and Baby started squawking and wouldn't stop. Finally we came over and saw a hawk. We looked at it for a little while. Then we scared it away. That's what I saw and heard.

Spencer F: One day when our bird was on the porch a hawk was staring down at it, during a spelling test. Then everyone got out of their seats. Finally Chase's grandpa shooed it away.

Annissa G: These are the things that Baby did with the hawk. This was on Friday. We were taking a test for spelling. Guess what! We heard some noise and everyone looked at the door and we saw there was Baby with the hawk on the ramp. Then we stared at the hawk and Mrs. Arvidson took a picture of the hawk and Baby and we made lots of copies and everybody was freaked out and a grandpa shooed the hawk away and we went back to work and Baby was feeling better. Good thing and that's what Baby and the hawk did while we were working.

Aleisha W: This is a story you might want to read. One Friday when my class was taking a spelling test Baby the Parakeet was making too much noise. My teacher put him outside. Then a hawk came and tried to eat Baby. All the 2nd grade classes were outside watching. Then the parent helper scared it off. Then every 2nd grade class went back in their classrooms. And my teacher put Baby inside. That is what happened when the hawk came.
