Notes:
A beautiful fall day brought out dozens of birders at Eagle Creek Park's Ornithology Center. The group was hoping to surpass the 56 species seen during the inaugural Big Sit in 2009. Despite a great effort, we fell a few species short. However, as slow as the day was at times, we were elated that we managed 53 species. Highlights included Bald Eagle, both yellowlegs, Sanderling, Baird's Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, both kinglets, and Red-breasted Nuthatch. To the delight of the hearty souls that were present all day, the nuthatch began visiting a feeder set up next to the observation deck during the last two hours of the count. Wonderful views of a bird just a few feet away from where the birders sat.
