Team Notes

Participants: David McNaughton, Richard Light, Julie Eckenrode, Maggie Hummel

Weather: 40F (start) to 70F (high), winds light to moderate, overcast and drizzle (start) to clear and open sky (end)

Location: Old Airport Field, Swatara State Park, Schuylkill County, PA

Time At Location: 12 hours 5 minutes (0642-1847)

Notes:
Started off the day with a dawn American Woodcock displaying twittering behind the captain's chair. Adult Bald Eagle late in the afternoon to lift spirits. Red-breasted Nuthatches, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Pine Siskens, Purple Finches, and Golden- and Ruby-crowned Kinglets all in early for this year's count. Common Raven near mid-day. Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles gone through most of region but still on Suedberg Swamp. Pine Warblers landed as the sun set. Lincoln's Sparrow found just 10 meters from the view of the circle, but never could get in the count.

Anecdotes:
Watched an American Goldfinch-dominated 30-minute fallout on what must have been Wagner's Pond past the treeline. Small songbirds just kept dropping out of the air, mostly tiny. Similar numbers on Robins departing this morning. Had all 5 Woodpeckers known to occur in the park, but had a very poor raptor and owl showing. Great first year, and will eagerly await Big Sit 2013!
