Unfortunately, the 2013 BIG SIT at Heinz Refuge, scheduled for Sunday, October 13, 2013, was cancelled. The U.S. government shutdown prohibited all access to Heinz Refuge property or resources (staff, volunteers, equipment, etc.). This is not a typical BIG SIT report, but let the records show that the government shutdown has/had widespread and devastating impact, especially for hundreds of visitors and supporters of John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. (NOTE: the report of Turkey Vulture is fictitious, entered only to ensure that a record of report is noted). Located deep in southwest Philadelphia, surrounded by trains, planes, automobiles, superfund landfills, oil refineries and mega-highways, Heinz Refuge protects the largest freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania, and provides diverse habitat, food, shelter and environmental education for countless number of human and wildlife communities. The closure of this National Wildlife Refuge, and many other government facilities during federal government shutdown, has far-reaching and devastating impacts on Heinz Refuge visitors, supporters, school children and many others. Friends of Heinz Refuge had little choice but to cancel the 2013 Big Sit, but remains hopeful that the government will resume operations shortly, so that FOHR can continue outreach and educational efforts for the urban Philadelphia community.
