Team Notes

Participants: Andrea Robbins, George Robbins

Weather: clear early then totally overcast with fog, 40 to 52 degrees, wind SE

Location: Freedom Town Forest, pond along the airstrip

Time At Location: 5:45 am to 1:30 pm

This was our second count here in the Freedom Town Forest at the pond along the airstrip, and our first "official" count. We ran the count unofficially back in 2008, during which we had 46 species. That first year was a good one for migrants moving over, including landbirds and raptors. In contrast, this year's count was hampered by heavy overcast and lingering fog, coupled with a SE wind, all of which did not encourage much to be moving and was never good for migrating raptors. We did enjoy a Barred Owl that continued to call as late as 10 am because it was so dark and dreary. Predawn, an American Woodcock circled overhead on twittering wings. Woodcock do nest in the Freedom Forest. There were a lot of Blue Jays moving about, carrying acorns. One flock of passerines that were feeding in the birches and pines, included nearly 20 Ruby-crowned Kinglets. It was a fun day despite the weather conditions.
