Team Notes

Participants: David Govatski, Dick Mallion, Blake Allison, George Clark, Tom Berriman, Chris Borg, Mary Boulanger, Kathi and Bill Dube, Carl Bretton, Naomi Levesque, Jay Perrault, Diane Allen, Sharon and Scott Harvell.

Weather: Temps ranged from 48-62 degrees, no wind and a low cloud ceiling of 2,700 feet until 1300 when the skies started to clear.

Location: Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge, Jefferson, NH

Time At Location: 0615-1845.

Notes:
The low numbers of waterfowl, raptor and passerine species is indicative of a 10 day stretch of Indian Summer with south winds and above average temperatures both here and further north. The comfortable weather for birders was also keeping the birds from wanting to migrate except for powerful flyers like scoters and Canada geese. Mammals: Chipmunk, Red Squirrel and a Porcupine. Signs and scat of Moose, Deer, Coyote, Black Bear and Beaver were noted. Reptiles and Amphibians: American Toad, Gray Tree Frog, Mink Frog, Green Frog, Northern Ringneck Snake and shells from recently hatched snapping turtles. Butterflies: Mourning Cloak. Visitors: We counted approximately 40 visitors, several of them arriving by bicycle and three arriving in strollers. We saw fewer dogs than usual with only three noted including a Golden Doodle, Golden Retriever and Blue Tick Hound. Birds Noted from the 17 foot count circle: 39 species is just above the seven-year average of 36 species but well below the 48 counted in 2010. Birds noted from outside the count circle: Several participants took walks to Moorhen and Cedar Marshes and saw a few species not seen or heard from the count circle: Marsh wren (3 at Moorhen Marsh and late for this species), Turkey Vulture, Palm Warbler and American Goldfinch.
