Team Notes

Participants: David McNaughton, Barbara Ritzheimer, Richard Light, Yvonne Werzinsky, David Ravegum, and 5 guests

Weather: Cold fog to start clearing and rising to mid-60's and full sun with breeze picking up at dusk

Location: Swatara State Park, Suedberg Airport, Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, PA

Time At Location: 13:50 (0527-1917)

Started with 2 American Woodcock buzzing the airfield, male purple finch singing early, ruby-crowned kinglet singing, Lincoln's sparrow, palm warbler, peregrine falcon, American kestrel, red-breasted nuthatch, juvenile bald eagle, common ravens, double-crested cormorants, and the usual thousands of robins and thousands of grackles.

A juvenile magnolia warbler popped up several times including into open bare trees, but we couldn't coordinate the viewers in the circle with the warbler's appearances. Immediately before the circle's nemesis Lincoln's sparrow popped up directly outside the ring after two straight years of seeing them around corners and out of view of the counter. We always end the day with the madness of counting robins, grackles, and cedar waxwings by the ones, then fives, then tens, and finally estimating by the hundreds as they stream into the nearby swamps. Started as we ended, in a chorus of white-crowned and white-throated sparrows.
