Team Notes

Participants: Ted Hazelton, Chris de Waller, Ned Mueller

Weather: Clear, but with chilly start, probably around 12 degrees C.

Location: Frog Pond, Oasi del Farfa, (RI) Lazio, Italy

Time At Location: 7AM-11 AM (4 hours, as true each year since 2013)

This year the Big Sit was 3 or 4 days earlier than prior years which may have explained the first recording of Barn Swallow. The count was also 5 higher than in previous years, but no other departing migrants played a role in that. Perhaps the good activity was weather related--early bird song when cold but insects inactive, followed by a long period feeding activity when it warmed enough for insects (even one moth--see photo) to become active. But it never became so warm as to led to diminished activity. We never had time to use our chairs all morning! Terrific!

Chris's favorite sighting was kingfisher. It is resident at this Oasi, but had recorded from the circle in the prior 3 years. Indeed the same was true for all 6 species added this year.
