Team Notes

Participants: Walter G. Ellison (Co-captain); Norma Broadhurst, Steve Croker, Nancy L. Martin(Co-captain)

Weather: Mostly cloudy to overcast. Temp: 60-65 def F. Wind NE 1-4 mph. Light rain started at 10:00 AM and became steady at 11:00 AM.

Location: Bogles Wharf, Eastern Neck NWR, Kent County, MD

Time At Location: 0700 to 1130. Left due to steady rain.

Notes:
Five new species added to our cumulative list of 133 species on E. Neck Is. The best were the 6 Am. White Pelicans in view all day long on rocks off Hail Pt. (#240 overall for Nancy and Walter on the island). Also good was the Yellow-billed Cuckoo birdhandling a katydid, a young male redstart, 2 Pileated Woodpeckers (responding to Walter's Barred Owl hooting), a calling parula flying over the sit, a hunting Peregrine (chasing a flicker), some close passes by sharpies, a fun sapsucker show in the white poplars (poplar with them), and a fly-by Common Loon.

Anecdotes:
Lots of fishermen out on the river for the morning. We were obliged to park in a slightly different location than last year to accommodate trucks with boat trailers. Once again we strapped a plywood board to the root of our Subaru Legacy/Outback wagon to give one of us a higher perspective (a movable observation tower if you will). We were able to show the pelicans and local eagles to a few of the passersby. The first white pelicans seen in Kent County in at least two decades.
