Anecdotes:
The 2018 Big Sit took place at Ann Lee Pond in Colonie on Saturday, October 13th. Light rain and chilly temperatures were the rule until about 11:00 a.m., when the precipitation ended and some sun broke through the clouds. We set up the count circle at 7:30 a.m., at the open picnic area at the north end of the pond. From there we could view the entirety of the pond north of the floating bridge, and we were close to a treeline along the boardwalk and paved path, and the pasture land beyond (there is a very large black steer there!) Colleen and I were dressed in rain gear, but it was pretty miserable for the first hour or so. A hero soon arrived in the form of George Steele, who decided he would go all the way back to his house and grab a pop-up canopy. Once we erected the rain cover comfort improved markedly. Throughout the morning and early afternoon a steady flow of new arrivals appeared, both avian and human, and we were able to put together a better-than-expected number of 37 species observed. Highlights included a "kettle" of nine vultures that rose over the nearby airport grounds including one Black Vulture; a female Belted Kingfisher (queenfisher?) which kept an eye on our group from a perch on one of the small islands in the pond; a handsome Blue-headed Vireo, seen in the treeline as we were setting up our spot upon arrival; a noisy House Wren and at least two very vocal Carolina Wrens; and a flock of nine Yellow-rumped Warblers that would fly down to stand on lily pads and other vegetation at the water's surface in order to feed on insects. The highlight for the day was Colleen's discovery of a Great Horned Owl in a spruce. It was mobbed briefly by a group of Blue Jays, which drew her attention to the spot. We got some photos (see eBird checklist below) and George was able to view it too when he returned from an errand. https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S49164722 Thanks to everyone who came out to join us in less than ideal conditions, we had a lot of fun!
