Team Notes

Participants: Doris Brookens, Kathy Kuchwarwa, Vernon Gauthier, Andy Markel, Annette Mathes, Sue Strassner, Tiffany Willow

Weather: High of 59F, NW wind, showers until 8:30 a.m., mostly overcast, sun peaking out later.

Location: Harrisburg PA

Time At Location: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. 8.5 hours

Notes:
With the river running high we did not expect to see much in the way of waterfowl and shorebirds. This proved to be true with fewer species of waterfowl than last year and no species of shorebirds. The best bird of the day was the Common Tern which was seen early in the morning. There were hundreds of swallows over the river with at least 2/3 of them being Tree Swallows and the rest Northern Rough-winged Swallows and one Barn Swallow.

Anecdotes:
Right around lunch time a first year Cooper's Hawk came swooping in from east to west over the river and took out a Blue Jay that was flying in front of our location. It was interesting to note that a Belted Kingfisher that was nearby left its perch and harrassed the hawk as it carried the Blue Jay away in its talons.
