Team Notes

Participants: Captain and eight other folks came on station and participated thruout the day

Weather: Mid 30's at startup, light breeze from ESE. High temp. just above 60, breeze WNW. Sunny A.M., Cloudy P.M.

Location: Black's Creek Bird Preserve, Ada Co., Idaho

Time At Location: Length of Sit: set-up to close-down, 9hrs. 45mins.

Notes:
Surprise hits: Mtn. Chick, No. Shrike, Barn Swall, Pect Sandpiper, Dunlin, Com Goldeneye, L-b Dowitcher. Surprise misses, RTHA's, place devoid of waterfowl. But, it was the second day of Idaho waterfowl season and we did have two hunting parties on team capt.'s arrival. Neither were successful considering the time they spent, maybe one bird each. Oddest thing I did note was the lack of bird movement, either in or out of the Preserve. Except for three species that did depart, one that arrived late and one flyover, all other birds in the checklist were on station continuously thruout the day and were seen regularly with no change in their numbers between start and end of day. I find it hard to believe but I will be able to do a proper ebird report because of this lack of movement. Three of us did some numbers and agreed on those numbers. All birds were quite active, whether feeding, swimming, chasing each other about, etc..

Anecdotes:
No real anecdotes this year. No big discussions about Double Stuff Oreos vs. original, nor any on which region of the country has the best barbecue sauce. Just a calm, quiet and competent group of birders. The hunters were no factor while on station but likely yesterday's hunters were the ones who cleared the place of most waterfowl and other waterbirds that had been noted on ebird just three days before. We did have a local photographer come thru, chatted with him a bit and when he returned showed us his photos of a Saw-whet he'd just found. However, it was too small, too far out and deeply buried in its tree to be seen by us from the circle. By now we were not getting any new birds, sky had clouded up, temperature was dropping as well as bird activity, so when some new hunters arrived on scene the group decided it was time to close up for this year. Gear was stowed and a few of us went looking for the owl and found same. Not a countable bird... Bummer! Participants in order of arrival, one all-day the others for varying periods: Team Capt. RL Rowland Amy Silver Terra Falconer Paul McGrane Craig Weisse Terri Liebler Ann Swanson Jim James Randy Langseth This was a first time at this for most and some said they'd like to do this again next year, same time, same place. I think we are set. 10,000 thanks to each and all for coming along. Continued Good Birding. RL Rowland
