Let’s start with a bird that’s red all over. This beauty is found across the southern United States, but only in summer. (That’s a hint, by the way.) It is insectivorous, so it won’t visit your bird feeder, but it does visit wooded yards. Right now, it’s in Central America or northern South America.
Identifying birds is at the very heart of bird watching. Each bird encountered is like a little puzzle or mystery to solve, because, while birds of a single species all share a certain set of physical traits, no two individual birds, like no two individual humans, are exactly alike.
