Can You Identify These Red Birds?

summer tanager

Mystery Bird #1

Let’s start with a bird that’s red all over. This beauty is found across the southern United States, but only in summer. (That’s a hint, by the way.) It is insectivorous, so it won’t visit your bird feeder, but it does visit wooded yards. Right now, it’s in Central America or northern South America.

Answer: Summer tanager. Its oversized bill, in addition to its solid red plumage, is a key distinguishing characteristic.
