white-crowned-sparrow

Mystery Sparrow #1

Let’s start with an easy one. This sparrow is named for its appearance. Adults are distinctive. Aside from its namesake field mark, notice the gray, unmarked breast and long tail.
a) White-throated sparrow
b) White-crowned sparrow
c) Five-striped sparrow
d) Pink-billed sparrow

Answer: b) The white-crowned sparrow is a year-round resident of the Pacific Northwest. Elsewhere, it breeds across northern Canada, and winters south of the Great Lakes. Warning: As is the case with most songbirds, first-winter birds don’t look like their parents, and so its name doesn’t describe it!
