Our smallest sparrow is brown above and white below. Its distinguishing feature is a dark breast band. Hint: It excavates a hole for its nest in vertical cliffs of dirt or sand, usually close to water.
a) Barn swallow
b) Bank swallow
c) Northern rough-winged swallow
d) Cave swallow

Answer: b) Bank swallow. Juvenile tree swallows also have a breast band, but not nearly as well defined and contrasting as that of bank swallows.
